Anti-immigrant policies are acts of self-destruction

The populist Danish People’s Party formed a bloc in Parliament in the early 2000s, and pushed for a series of increasingly xenophobic anti-immigrant laws. These laws, Professor of Sociology Brooke Harrington argues, "not only embarrassed [Denmark] internationally but also sabotaged its own economy and undermined its own longstanding development efforts." Professor Harrington was prosecuted under one of these laws for giving lectures on her academic research to the Danish Parliament and to government agencies, at their request. She shares her story, and warns of the dangers of such policies, in a New York Times Op Ed.
